Operating
Principles |
The goals of the Parents Association Mission Statement are met through the
following operating principles:
In
order to promote communication and
mutual understanding among parents, faculty and administration, the
Parents Association will
act as a conduit for information in a variety of ways. Among parents,
communication takes place through:
-
Parents Association Newsletter, Trevor
Days
-
-
Weekly emails
-
Up-to-date bulletin boards
-
Various meetings that take place during the school year

Additionally, parent volunteers, serving a two year term,
act as Parent Representatives. These Parent Representatives are assigned a group of families
from their grade to whom they are responsible for communicating important
Parents Association information throughout the year. Much of this communication
takes place electronically, through the use of email and the Parents Association
section of the my.Trevornet website. To facilitate communication between
parents and school administration, Parents Association Parent Representatives
attend monthly meetings with the appropriate Trevor Division Director, PA
Co-President and PA Division Chair. Additionally, several Open Forums are
held during the year for all high school parents. The PA Co-Presidents attend
a monthly meeting with the Head of School, as well as serve on the Board
of Trustees and standing Board committees.

To support the educational objectives and mission statement
of the school, the Parents Association sponsors programs such as Everybody
Reads,
parent/faculty book discussion groups, Upper School parent-student assemblies
relating to significant life issues, and talks and forums for parents regarding
items of interest, including child and adolescent development, substance
abuse awareness, learning issues, internet safety and health issues.
The
Parents Association provides direct financial support to the school through
its
fundraising endeavors. In addition to the Fall Festival Weekend in November,
smaller fundraising events may be held at other times during the year. The
majority of the funds raised from these events directly benefit the school,
faculty and students in the following ways:
|
|
| |
|
 |
Senior
Dinner and Gift to the Senior Class
|
 |
|
-
Direct
contributions to the school's operating budget Support
of the Everybody Reads program
which occurs throughout the year
-
Funding
for Faculty Grants
-
Faculty
Staff Appreciation Day
-
Senior
Dinner and Senior Class gifts
A minimal
portion of the funds are used to cover the expenses of the PA (e.g., newsletters,
special programs, refreshments at meetings and to support ongoing fundraising
efforts).
Community-building
events are
crucial to achieving the goals of the Parents Association. The PA fosters
this goal through a variety of activities including:
-

-

-

-

Your involvement in these events will introduce parents to a wonderful
community of interesting, talented and caring families, and make Trevor
students' school years more meaningful for both parents and students. All
parents are urged to attend as many of these events as possible and
to be actively involved in the school.
Lastly, the Parents Association works closely with the Admissions Office
to welcome new families
to the TDS community. A Parent Partner is assigned to each new family and helps
guide both parents and student through their first year at the school. The
PA also hosts welcome coffees and breakfasts for incoming families.
In conjunction
with other NYC Independent Schools, the Parents Association is involved
in facilitating the following programs:
-
Safety
Patrol - Trevor Day School participates with other independent schools
in the Safety Patrol program under the auspices of the Parents League
and the West Side Crime Prevention Program.
-
Parents
League - Parents League participation provides parents with current information
about education, entertainment and enrichment opportunities for their
children.
-
Parents
in Action - PiA is an independent organization that fosters communication
among parents on non-academic issues, provides speakers and newsletters
on information pertinent to families.
