The Common Room |
An important goal of Trevor's mission is to stimulate
collaboration and promote mutual respect. We have deliberately
designed our space to support those goals through our common
rooms. In these busy environments, students
learn to work with each other and with faculty members. Each student
or group of students respect each others' unique learning
styles and activities in a large and busy space. We have three common rooms:
- The Grade 4 & 5 Common Room
- The Middle School Common Room, Grades 6 - 8
and
- The High School Student/Faculty
Center, Grades 9-12
The Common Room provides an excellent place to work
on assignments because teachers and classmates are available for
support and collaboration. It also is a great place for students
to get a head start on homework. Teacher/Advisors’ desks
are in the Common Room. When students have an advisor conference,
they meet their advisor at his or her desk. Discretionary Time in the Common Room and In Other
Places Trevor schedules discretionary
time into each student's schedule. This
valuable time is there for students to learn time management
and how to
approach
teachers
with questions. As they mature, students will have to learn to
manage their time and their own schedules to accommodate responsibilities.
At Trevor, we
believe that learning to manage time is a key skill in the course
of becoming
a life-long learner. The Common Room experience is a great training
ground for this process. Teachers monitor how students use their
time and successful students are there to model good study habits
for those who are still learning to manage their responsibilities.
Students in the Upper School may also make use of other facilites
in the school during discretionary periods, such as the library,
art, dance and music studios and the gym. |
