Mathematics

Mathematics classes use a combination of textbooks and technology to develop the students’ abilities to think independently and creatively. The mathematics courses solidify and expand on the basic concepts explored in the previous years while challenging the students to make connections and further their understanding of the material. Students are given the opportunity to construct their own methods for problem solving as they explore nontraditional methods and learn traditional algorithms. Our math program is supplemented with various opportunities for students to challenge themselves independently and to study concepts more extensively via technology.

Grade 6

The program for grade 6 solidifies and extends students’ understanding of arithmetic concepts. Topics include data interpretation, application of decimal and fraction operations, number theory, geometry concepts and formulas, measurement, ratios/rates and percents.

Grade 7

Students are given the opportunity to pursue studies in pre-algebra. Topics include a review and extension of arithmetic operations using the language of algebra, as well as an introduction to concepts in algebra, such as rational numbers, evaluating algebraic expressions, solving linear equations, graphing, and using equations to solve word problems. The students also work in cooperative learning groups on a unit involving plane geometry. They study basic geometric concepts, such as perimeter and area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons, as well as circumference and area of circles. With this unit, students also learn how to apply geometric formulas, along with problem-solving strategies.

Grade 8

In grade eight, students begin formal algebra. By the end of the year, students successfully completing algebra have a solid understanding of number properties and order of operations, variables, linear equations, functions, coordinate geometry, systems of equations, polynomials and their factors, radicals, and quadratic equations.
