Service Learning in Grades 6 - 8

The Middle School's Service Learning program has both an internal focus (on maintenance of Trevor’s spaces) and external focus (on programs connected to its outdoor/alternative education program). The program was designed to help the students understand the importance of citizenship and respect for the community and community spaces.

Internal Community responsibilities are executed by each advisee group on a rotating basis. The Responsibilities include:

Classrooms

  • Each advisee group is responsible for a room, or a piece of a room.
  • Each group is responsible for the upkeep of that room.
  • Each advisee group should work with their advisor to develop a system for keeping the room clean.

Cafeteria

  • Over the course of the year, each advisee group is be responsible for maintaining the cafeteria during their lunch period for an entire six-day cycle.
  • These responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
    1. Wiping down tables at the end of each lunch period
    2. Making sure no food is on the floor by the tables, or by where the food is served. Checking under tables, too!
    3. Making sure used trays are placed neatly on top of garbage cans
    4. Making sure the cleaning up process is finished by five minutes before the end of lunch period
    5. Helping the advisor dismiss students once everything is deemed clean enough.

Common Room

  • Over the course of the year, each advisee group is responsible for maintaining the Common Room for an entire six-day cycle.
  • These responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
    1. Finding time each day to straighten up in the Common Room.
    2. Making sure nothing is on the floor.
    3. Straightening chairs and tables.
    4. Making sure backpacks are in neat piles by advisors' desks
    5. Putting any clothing that is just "laying around" in the lost and found
    6. Vacuuming the Common Room at least once a week
    7. Making sure used printer paper is properly recycled
    8. Taking the lead in helping to reorganize the Common Room if there is an assembly

Hallways

  • Over the course of the year, each advisee group are responsible for maintaining the hallways for an entire six-day cycle.
  • These responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
    1. Finding time each day to straighten up the hallways
    2. Making sure there is no trash on the floor
    3. Putting anything kept on top of lockers in the lost and found
    4. Putting any clothing that is "just laying around" in the lost and found
    5. Sweeping the hallways at least twice a cycle
