Trevor's belief that students
should be active learners is supported perfectly by our
use of technology
throughout the school and beyond. The laptop computer, in
particular, is central in helping our students become anytime
anywhere learners. With their laptops in hand, they are poised
to
plug in not only to our intranet but also to the world beyond
school via their wireless Internet connections. They learn
to gather, compare and evaluate new information and to use
their computers’ powerful tools to create, communicate,
calculate and express their growing understanding. They become
digital thinkers and life-long learners, ready to take on
the 21st century future. After initiating our laptop program
in 1996, we noticed that students' productivity, creativity
and understanding rose substantially. Teachers who have tracked
the program note that our students have become better writers
and now are writing more than ever, thanks to their everyday
use of word processing and their lightning-fast typing rates
honed by the use of Instant Messaging. Options for students
to communicate ideas in addition to writing have also increased,
thanks to new and more powerful laptops. Students now create
web sites, videos, dvds and other dynamic multimedia presentations
to convey their knowledge and, thanks to our wireless network,
they can and do produce work anytime, anywhere.
