Students
begin using computers in the Early Childhood (Grades Nursery
- Kindergarten) years at Trevor, which engages them and gives
them
familiarity and
comfort
with
technology. They
are introduced to computers slowly at first,
providing a balance
of fun
with lessons on how computers should be used
responsibly. As they progress through the grades, the computer
becomes a more ubiquitous and crucial tool for learning, research,
creativity and communication.
Pre-Nursery
- Kindergarten
Early
Childhood classrooms all have at least one computer, accessible
to all students under teacher supervision. Customized web
sites with many activities for each grade from
Kindergarten
through Grade 5. Students are able to play games on the
computers and participate in
interactive activities arranged by their teachers.
1st
and 2nd Grade
There
are two desktop computers available in the classrooms as students
begin exploring more academically related software such as
word processing and Hyperstudio, a multimedia-storytelling
software program.
3rd
Grade
Students
use the mobile lab, which is a cart of laptops that is transported
to each class. Each laptop in the mobile lab is owned by two
or three students so they can begin learning how to be responsible
for one computer.
4th
Grade
The
mobile lab is used in 4th grade as well, except now children
share a
laptop only with one other person, and it is personalized for those
two students.
5th
Grade
5th
grade is the point at which children join Trevor's laptop
program. Families are required to purchase a laptop through
the school and Dell for their child to use
in school and take home. Students are taught how to use their computers
responsibly, and
are under careful supervision when
using them at school. Parents
are also encouraged to
monitor their kids when
they
use their laptops at home.
6th
Grade - 12th grade
At
this point, students are expected to abide by the School's
Acceptable
Use Policy and less direct supervision
is necessary although there is supervision in many spaces throughout
the school. However, we stress that students are expected
to use their computers responsibly and expect that they have
learned to do so. Homework assignments are and returned online
via Microsoft Class Server feedback from teachers is often
given online.
