Engaging Elementary Students
At Trevor, we recognize that each student comes to school with innate curiosity, immense potential, and a natural desire to learn and grow. It is our privilege to harness these inherent characteristics and balance them within each student's academic experience. By doing so, we empower the students and put each child at the center of his or her learning. With the individual child as our focal point, we have an even greater capacity to engage each student deeply in his or her learning, and develop rich intellectual foundations and diverse learning skills.
Grades 1-5 Learning Environment
Trevor's Lower School program empowers children to develop skills, knowledge, and strategies for learning and questioning throughout their education. Students build a strong academic base while also pursuing emerging interests and developing the identities they will have as lifelong learners.
Students follow a classic Lower School curriculum to prepare for entry into the Middle School and the college-preparatory Upper School program. Students pursue academic excellence in a well-rounded program that includes reading, writing, language arts (spelling, handwriting, grammar), mathematics, science, social studies, Spanish, technology and computer science, art, music, physical education, and library. Expert teachers, small class sizes, and engaging inquiry-based methodologies further enliven this dynamic curriculum, helping to advance each child's ability to think analytically and creatively. In the process, students' natural curiosity is continually satisfied and expanded—thus inspiring a joy for lifelong learning.
The curriculum is a challenging, developmentally appropriate, and includes many opportunities for inquiry-based and hands-on experiences. Because children learn and work at varying rates, Trevor designs its curriculum to engage students at different levels. To challenge children, content is often pushed to the edge of a students' understanding and competence levels. This approach works because the Trevor classroom is known to students as a safe place to take intellectual risks and to explore new areas of study.
