Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Jennifer Egan Visits Trevor

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jennifer Egan spent the day at Trevor’s Upper School on October 28th. She started the day hosting a Q&A with Trevor parents (who had previously read and discussed her works in a book club), followed by an assembly with the Upper School students and faculty--including an in-depth interview led by students Taliyah W. ’22, Camille L. ’23, and Nicholas A. ’21. The visit concluded with a round-table writer’s workshop with a group of students. Egan shared insights into her writing process, along with tips for student writers. She focused on the importance of making mistakes, getting feedback, and making revisions. She discussed how every success she's had has been built on failures, and she impressed upon the students the value of trial and error in all parts of life.

Egan was born in Chicago and raised in San Francisco. Her 2017 novel, Manhattan Beach, has been awarded the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. She is also the author of The Invisible Circus, a novel that was made into a 2001 feature film starring Cameron Diaz; Look at Me, a finalist for the 2001 National Book Award; Emerald City and Other Stories; The Keep; and A Visit From the Goon Squad--which won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, and the LA Times Book Prize.

Her short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Harpers, Granta, McSweeney’s, and other notable publications. She is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction, and a Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Fellowship at the New York Public Library. Also a journalist, she has written frequently for the New York Times Magazine. Her 2002 cover story on homeless children received the Carroll Kowal Journalism Award, and The Bipolar Kid received a 2009 NAMI Outstanding Media Award for Science and Health Reporting from the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
