Application Procedures

  • Age Requirements

When creating a class, we carefully consider the many dimensions of a balanced early learning or elementary classroom—including students’ gender, personality, diversity, ability, and age range. We give close attention to each child’s development as well as the class configuration. General birthday guidelines are listed below. We are happy to discuss your child’s age and placement at your Adult Meeting.

Applicants to Nursery must turn 2.8 by August 31 of the year they hope to enter Trevor. (Birthday between January 1, 2018 – January 1, 2019)

    Pre-Kindergarten applicants:
Applicants to Pre-K typically turn four by September 1 of the year they hope to enter Trevor. (Birthday between September 1, 2017 -September 1, 2018)

    Kindergarten applicants:
Applicants to Kindergarten typically turn five by September 1 of the year they hope to enter Trevor. (Birthday between September 1, 2016 –September 1, 2017)

  • Adult Meeting/Applicant Meeting

We are pleased to offer families the opportunity to self-register for all events including TeleAdmissions Applicant/Adult Meetings
www.ravenna-hub.com. This will allow families to register at their own convenience. Once registered, all families will receive a
confirmation email followed by an email with details about each event and Zoom links. Each meeting will be with a representative
    from our Admissions team.

Each grade level is different; please read carefully.

Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten: This meeting will include a conversation, a few developmentally appropriate tasks, and time for questions. An adult should sit near the child, yet support independence. Typically, we spend 30 minutes with the child and an equal amount of time with the adult.

All of our families Kindergarten–Grade 5 will have two separate meetings: one for the candidate and one for their adult.

Kindergarten: Each applicant will have the option of taking part in The Thinking and Engagement Assessment (details via our website) or scheduling a 45-minute meeting with a member of the Trevor Admissions team.

Grades 1‒5: Every applicant will be scheduled for a 50-minute meeting.

Adult meetings for Kindergarten–Grade 5: Adult(s) are offered a separate 30-minute meeting to share information and ask questions. For families with applicant siblings, only one Adult Meeting is necessary.

Applicant Writing for Pre-Kindergarten–Grade 5: Each applicant will complete writing during their meeting. Promptly after the meeting, please take a picture of your child’s work and email it to LSAdmissions@trevor.org. Be sure to include the applicant’s name and grade in the subject line. If you need additional options beyond the schedule offered in Ravenna, please call us at 212.426.3355 or email at lsadmissions@trevor.org.
  • The Thinking & Engagement Assessment (Kindergarten Option)

Each applicant will have the option of taking part in the Thinking and Engagement Assessment (Click for details) or scheduling a 45-minute meeting with a member of the Trevor Admissions team.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the constraints that it imposed on the running of schools, a group of New York City Independent School Admission Directors enlisted the help of two experts in early childhood development--each with over forty years of experience in working with children as they learn, grow, and transition to Kindergarten. The Admission Directors asked these two psychologists to develop a virtual assessment to serve the needs and interests of Kindergarten applicants, their families, and schools. The goal was twofold: to put minimal pressure on young children and families during this unprecedented time and to provide our Admission Committees with information about children when schools would not be able to meet and observe them in person. The T&E Assessment, as it is commonly known, enables families to apply to multiple, participating schools but forgo the burden of multiple assessments. Applicants engage in one common assessment, the results of which are shared with schools to which the family has applied and that accept and/or require the T&E Assessment. Due to the continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 community spread among unvaccinated children and adults, many schools have decided to require the T&E Assessment for the 2021-2022 admission season since they will not be able to invite applicants into their school buildings for visits.
  • Opportunities to Visit

Given the changing set of circumstances, we will not be offering in person meetings or tours. We hope to offer in person meetings at some point. Should the opportunity arise, we will communicate as promptly as possible. To register for our virtual events, please visit www.ravenna-hub.com.

  • Confidential School Report Form (ISAAGNY Form)

The confidential school report form may be sent via Ravenna directly to your child’s school and returned directly to the Admissions office. You will be able to request appropriate forms through Ravenna by assigning the form to a teacher/administrator via email. We welcome past reports, transcripts, and records whenever possible. Please email them to lsadmissions@trevor.org with the applicant’s name in the subject line. All completed forms are due by Friday, January 7, 2022.

A transcript release form may be required by your child’s current school to allow the transmission of previous reports. You may print the form and share it with your child’s school, as necessary.
  • Testing

After a thorough consideration, Trevor has suspended both the requirement and consideration of ISEE Primary, ISEE and/or SSAT test scores in our Lower School Admissions process. This decision eliminates the possibility of unequal access to these exams.
  • Financial Aid

We encourage families applying to Nursery through 5th grade to complete the TADS (Tuition Aid Data Services) Financial Aid application as soon as possible after submission of the Application for Admission. The deadline is December 1st. TADS applications will be available online at www.tads.com beginning October 1st. There is a single $45 fee to submit a TADS application, regardless of how many schools receive the financial aid summary report. There are no fee waivers for TADS applications. The Tuition and Financial Aid page of Trevor’s website provides additional information about our Financial Aid program.
  • ISAAGNY Notification Dates

Trevor Day School complies with the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York (ISAAGNY) common notification dates. Decisions will be posted in your Ravenna account.
