Head of School's Welcome

Welcome to Trevor Day School

Visitors often ask me: “What is it that makes Trevor unique?

I often answer by recounting my first meeting with Trevor seniors, now some eight years ago. Sitting in the dance studio with their new Head of School, I witnessed in all of these students three traits: fierce intellect; a genuine engagement in their studies, their community, and their world; and an ability to balance a challenging college-prep environment with dynamic lives outside of school. These themes of ambitious minds, engagement, and balance are cited over and over again by alumni, parents, faculty, and students as the school’s defining characteristics.

Here at Trevor, children are at the center of all that we do. We are a coeducational, college-preparatory, Nursery through Grade 12 day school that values and respects the diversity of our student body. Trevor’s approach to educating children proves uniquely innovative. Trevor students successfully balance a rigorous curriculum with their personal happiness, achievement, and meaningful engagement with others. Rigor and happiness are at the core of our students’ experiences. One is not at the expense of the other.

Throughout our 91-year history, we have built a tradition of nurturing the talents and passions of every child we serve. Trevor works with parents to cultivate their children’s inherent gifts—thereby, developing in them a deep intellectual foundation. We challenge students to make meaning of what they are learning, and to guide them to become self-advocating and critical thinkers. We employ inquiry-based learning methodologies, guided by devoted and expert teachers who model collaboration, intellectual passion, and adaptability. Students take ownership of their learning and ask tough questions that lead to deep understanding.
Our goal is to challenge students to make meaning of what they are learning, and to guide them to become self-advocating and critical thinkers. We do so by using inquiry-based learning methodologies, guided by devoted teachers who model collaboration, intellectual passion, and adaptability
The architecture of our school’s two campuses tangibly supports student learning. Within student-centered common spaces, teachers and students collaborate dynamically; together, they navigate a classic curriculum that leads to academic mastery, innovative thinking, and a global perspective. Both the LEED-Gold Middle and Upper School on East 95th Street, and our renovated Lower School on West 88th Street, provide optimal educational environments that support Trevor’s mission to place students at the center of their learning. Furthermore, Trevor’s signature programs, including sustainability, global education, a rich advisory program, family conferences, DEI programming, MiniTerm, and the senior Bridge program further enhance the student experience.

I invite you to visit, virtually or in person, and see for yourself what makes Trevor the special place that it is. We uniquely prepare our students for the nation’s finest colleges and universities, and empower them to discover the crucial intersection in which their gifts meet the world’s needs. Indeed, it is our reason for being.
