New Year's News!

We're excited to share a few Lower School updates from the 2023–24 school year so far. We've been busy at Trevor!

  • Health & Wellness Classes: This year, we’ve added weekly 4th- & 5th-Grade Health & Wellness classes, precursors to our Middle and Upper School Health & Wellness curriculum. These classes cover a range of topics from human development and managing social & emotional dynamics with friends to reflecting on how learning styles contribute to effective schoolwork.

  • K–2 Literacy Curriculum Enhancements: We’ve updated our literacy curriculum  in research-based, developmentally-appropriate ways, to best serve our growing readers. The Trevor curriculum draws upon the best of Wilson Fundations, Writing Revolution, Heggerty, Teachers College, Fountas & Pinnell, and other Orton Gillingham-based work.

  • Parent Connections: Did you know our Specialist teams send out monthly newsletters for each grade, N–5, detailing the various explorations in Music, PE, Art, Computer Science, Spanish, and Library? Here’s an example from Kindergarten Art. This year we’ve also added monthly Sunny Morning Workshops during which community experts present on aspects of our programming such as early reading development, supporting students in their social, emotional, and academic development, and the transition to the Middle School program and curriculum.

  • Expanded Interdisciplinary Curriculum: We’re doing even more in the MakerSpace this year to connect our science and computer science curricula through interdisciplinary, hands-on studies. Our 4th graders recently constructed multimedia biome dioramas and our 5th graders completed a unit on plants, using woodworking tools to create pedestals and sculpting clay pots to display their plants. Next up—electricity comes to life with hands-on circuitry!

  • The Sunny Book Swap is in full swing this month. Instead of a traditional book fair, the Lower School debuted a book swap, wherein students and families cycle out gently worn books and other students and families cycle them in. It's a blockbuster hit!
At Trevor we know that a close partnership between home and school is a vital factor in helping our students grow and develop. When our students, their families, and our teachers are all working together and communicating around the same goals, students can meet the challenges set for them and thrive.
