Trevor Thursday Digest - November 5, 2020
Dear Trevor Community,
At 6:00 am the morning after Election Day, I sent the following note to Trevor’s faculty and staff. Its sentiments are equally true today, as we await further word regarding the outcome of the presidential election.
I am sure that I am not the only person on the faculty and staff who had a restless night. With the end of voting last evening, and the counting of ballots from all over the country, this morning we find ourselves in a position not unlike other elections in my lifetime—when it was unclear the day following the election who our next president would be. In fact, we may not know the final outcome for days or weeks to come—that is the reality of this morning. The reality calls for us to be patient.
Understandably, this electoral season has witnessed passion and commitment across the political spectrum. Again, this has also not been unusual during election seasons throughout our history.
While we do not yet know who our president will be, and while rhetoric remains high and still negative, I urge all of us to live according to Lincoln's view of the "better angels of our nature" and continue to focus on what is most important today: the children in our classrooms. Let's remain committed to them by being balanced, reasonable, and positive examples of what America's democracy is all about: the right to disagree without being disagreeable, allowance for debate of ideas (even half-formed ideas), hopefulness even when one wants to feel despair.
We will get through all of our challenges in a community of respect, inclusion, and care for one another. That is who we are, and we are called to be our best selves.

The history department has done a splendid job hosting Trevor’s Governance & Politics Series the last few weeks—a forum that has investigated issues of governance, governmental structure, the role of the media, and the future of American politics. Please consider joining our last session on Thursday, November 12th, at 4:30–6:00 pm, when history department members and I will reflect on lessons learned from the 2020 election season. Perhaps by then we’ll even know who will take office on January 20, 2021.
