Athletics Overview

Welcome to Trevor Athletics!

As Trevor Dragons, we emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, and individual growth as core values of our athletic programs. Passionate coaches impart lessons that are key to athletic and individual development: self-confidence, cooperation, commitment, and the power of hard work. Trevor is a member of the New York City Athletic League (NYCAL), and many of our teams and student-athletes are award-winning competitors at the league, city, and state level.

Trevor offers both nine sports for boys and girls at the Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels. A large percentage of Trevor students participate in interscholastic athletics, which we believe complements and enhances their education. Making use of an innovative PE/Athletics schedule, 75% of Middle School students participate on at least one team. At the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels, 60% of Upper School students participate on one or more athletic teams. Each team has dedicated, experienced coaches that strive for the growth of each student-athlete on and off the fields and courts of competition. Coaches are certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and AED and complete the Heads Up Concussion Certification.

There’s a place for everyone in Trevor Athletics and we are excited for you to be a part of it. At Trevor, we collectively build courage to breathe fire.

  • Trevor Philosophy

Participation as a member of any team requires collaboration, commitment, and respect for shared goals. At Trevor, our coaching staff aspires to help individual student- athletes develop a sense of responsibility, cooperation, self-discipline, and self- confidence. We believe that every student, regardless of athletic ability, can grow and benefit through participation in interscholastic athletics. Our philosophy ensures that every student has the opportunity to join a team and put into play the Trevor values of good sportsmanship, consistent effort, teamwork, and personal accountability.

  • Facilities

With Randall's Island nine minutes away by bus, and Central Park five blocks in the other direction, Trevor operates as the field school of Manhattan.

To compliment the easy access to outdoor fields, Trevor has two full-sized NFHS-certified basketball and volleyball courts, and a third gym that can host Middle School-level games as well as act as practice facilities. With its NFHS-certified courts, Trevor is often tapped to host state championships. The athletics facilities also include a mezzanine with cardio- and strength-training equipment, and a multipurpose space that can be used for a variety of athletic and physical education programs including TRX bands, core worksouts, Spin, and plyometrics.
  • Playing Time

    7th and 8th grade
While all members of the team will be given the opportunity to play, playing time is earned through teamwork, sportsmanship, talent, and commitment to oneself and the team.

    Junior Varsity
Student Athletes earn playing time through hard work, commitment, skill, and sportsmanship. There is a try-out process each season for the Junior Varsity teams.

    Varsity
While maintaining the core values of Trevor's Athletic Philosophy, at the Varsity level, Trevor’s goal is to build and sustain competitiveness within our league and NYSAIS. There is a try-out process each season for the Varsity teams.
  • Trevor Athletics Department Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy for Students on JV and Varsity Athletics Teams
    • If a student-athlete needs to miss a practice or game, it must be communicated to coach no later than 24 hours in advance. This gives our coaches enough time to strategize the most effective practice plan and approach to the game knowing who they have to work with on their teams. It also ensures the health and wellness of our student-athletes during competition.
    • Student-athletes will be given a warning if they miss a team event (practice or game) without appropriate notice (24 hours in advance). If you go home sick, please make sure it is noted within SchoolPass and that you alert your coach.
    • After two absences without notice, the student-athlete will sit out the next contest.
    • If a pattern of absences (excused or unexcused) is noticed during the season, the Director of Athletics and Coach will meet with the student-athlete to determine if remaining on the team is appropriate.
This policy is a foundational piece for our growth of our competitive athletic teams. If you feel as though you cannot fully commit to the team for the remainder of the semester, please let us know and we will help find the right fit within athletics and/or the Trevor community.

  • Middle & Upper School Fall Teams Summer Schedule

Upper School teams begin their season toward the end of summer, in accordance with NYSAIS start dates. It is imperative to begin at this time to allow teams and individuals to achieve the required number of practices before a student-athlete may compete in a scrimmage or contest, as well as to prepare for the highly competitive season to come. Students who miss the start of the fall athletic season will jeopardize their standing on the team and may impact eligibility to participate in scrimmages and contests until the NYSAIS standard is met. Middle School athletes are not required to attend any practices before the start of the academic school year. Any Middle School athletic practices that take place before the start of school are entirely optional. These are the start dates that have been established, as well as the MS and US Sports Standards.

    Middle School Fall Start Dates
    Fall 2023- September 5, 2023

    Upper School Fall Start Dates
    Fall 2023- August 21* pre-season start / try-outs

  • The New York City Athletic League

Trevor is a full member in the New York City Athletic League (The NYCAL). The league was established to encourage member schools to improve their extra-curricular athletics programs. Association with a league allows for more consistent scheduling, equalizing competition, conducting league meets, championships, and the adherence to league standards and goals. To remain a league member in good standing, schools must adhere to the league’s bylaws, rules, and regulations.

The following schools are members of the NYCAL: The Browning School; The Calhoun School; Columbia Preparatory; The Loyola School; Lycée Français de New York; St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's School (MS only); Trevor Day School; United Nations International School.
  • NYSAISAA Sports Standards

Trevor is a member in good standing of the New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association (NYSAISAA) that serves as the authority in the supervision and guidance of the interscholastic athletic activities of its member schools in New York State. Trevor elects to join the Federation List, which means we abide by the Commissioner’s Regulation as it pertains to athletics in order to compete with member schools in the NYSPHSAA, CHSAA, and the PSAL, and agrees to abide by all the state bylaws, rules, and regulations.

  • Sportsmanship Statement

Trevor promotes good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches, and spectators. All efforts of the players, coaches, and officials should be met by cheering in a positive manner.  At no time should spectators speak to participants, coaches, or officials while at an athletic event. Any slurs, personal insults, profanity, fighting, or other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal from the site of competition. Games should be competitive but, above all, fun and friendly for everyone.
  • Supplements and the Trevor Athlete

Some athletes use supplements to try to replenish the body. While some supplements might be beneficial, the entire supplement category is NOT REGULATED by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Companies put products on the market that could include potentially harmful ingredients. The FDA states that the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring the safety of the product: however, much of the testing is done by the manufacturer itself, not an independent third party.

We strongly suggest that a student-athlete consult a physician before consuming any unregulated substance.

  • Weather with Regard to Athletics

The Athletics Department and its coaches consistently monitor the weather to ensure that student-athletes are safe. With that said, teams do practice/compete in cold, hot, and wet conditions. The school’s full-time Athletic Trainer contacts coaches to inform them if a team must stay inside or adjust their practice/contest in any way to ensure the safety of the student-athletes. Coaches also have the ability to adjust their practice at any time, but cannot exceed the restrictions that have been placed by the Certified Athletic Trainer. Trevor adheres to the following guidelines for Wind Chill and Heat Index:

In the event of thunder and/or lightning, all outdoor practices/contests will be immediately suspended. When thunder is heard or lightning is seen, all athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators should immediately seek shelter—either in a building or a vehicle with a solid metal top (i.e., a car, van, or bus). No one should seek shelter under a tree; everyone should stand clear of poles, antennas, towers, and underground watering systems.

    Thunder and Lightning Policy

Athletic practices/contests will not resume until 30 minutes after the last boom is heard or strike is seen.
  • Athletic Training and Sports Medicine

Our goal is to provide the highest level of medical care to our student-athletes. We employ evidence-based prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation methods for all athletes. Our goal is to return athletes to their sport in the quickest—but safest—way possible, focusing on student athlete’s health and safety as our top priority. We strive to be role models for the profession and increase awareness of the athletic training profession.

    Treatment Policy

The athletic training department is available for the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of Trevor students and athletes. Evaluation and treatment are on a first-come, first-served basis. However, priority will be given to any emergency injury. The Athletic Training staff is available in the afternoon for rehabilitation and evaluation of injuries. Otherwise, appointments are privately scheduled with the Athletic Trainer.

    Taping / Bracing
The athletic training room is fully equipped with a variety of taping and custom bracing supplies that can be used prophylactically or as a treatment method of an injury.

    Modalities
The athletic training room is fully equipped with many modalities to assist an athlete in injury recovery. A modality is a method, device, or machine that can assist with injury recovery.

    Heat Therapy
